Lindley Farley was born in Queens, New York. He studied piano from ages 5-8, then promptly retired from learning the instrument. "Mr. Brown, bless his heart, was my teacher, and in typical fashion of the day, taught me the rudiments of sight reading and nothing else. No theory, no composition, zip. At a certain point going to lessons was like going to the dentist every week.
"I'm surprised I ever took an interest in music after that." What Lindley did for most of his teens was write and draw comic books. Some of which were published in the 80's by Continuity Comics' imprint "Echo of FuturePast" (re-realized by Louis Mitchell and Neal Adams). At 17, Lindley shifted back to music when he bought a Japanese mandolin. "I saw it in Manny's window on 48th Street, and said 'I must have it.' My mom gave me $45 the next week and it was mine. My intent was to take it to my high school and impress a girl. A lot of the other boys brought in their acoustic guitars, so I thought I'd be unique with my mandolin. "Of course, instead mom bought me a book on mandolin technique and I spent the next couple of months learning scales and chords. By then, it had become just another tool and I never took it to school."
"With the Road Show, we played the New Wave circuit, CB's, Trude Heller's, the Pyramid Club. The last shows we played were our best, and happily I've found some of the cassette tapes."
