PAUL C. McKASTY TRIBUTE PAGE

Before Paul C. produced hip-hop acts such as Eric B. & Rakim, Large Professor, Ultramagnetic MC and Mikey D & the LA Posse, we played together in the Mandolindley Road Show. I met Paul in the Spring of 1980 when his focus was on playing his fretless Fender Precision bass, which he was brilliant at. He contributed much to the sound of the band and co-wrote three of the songs on the LP.

Contrary to popular opinion, we didn't stop working together after the demise of the band in 1985; in fact, we performed shows in 1986 with guitarist Freddie Tane and drummer Richie Sheridan. Additionally, in 1988-89, we recorded 3 tracks for an album project.

One of my favorite memories is when we were recording the album. We had hired a percussionist for the day. He came to Hi-Five Studios by cab showing up with a Santa Claus sack full of chimes, bells, triangles, bongos, shoe-trees, claves and anything else that clapped, scratched, clonked or boinged. He recorded his parts for four songs and packed up his stuff.

Paul and I had promised to drive him home, but also decided it was a good time to play one of our patented gags on the unsuspecting tinker of timpanis. We told the engineer to tell the percussionist that we had gotten on the elevator to leave as our man was pulling his weighty sack over his shoulder.

Paul and I watched from a back room as our panicked percussionist ran to the stairway to charge down the four flights of stairs to catch up with us. Just as he hit the stairway it happened; he dropped his bag and all of his noise-makers fell down the flight of stairs to the lower level. It was as riotous cacophony of clanging and crashing a musician ever heard. In fact, it echoed through the entire building. Thankfully, nothing was hurt, we shamefully helped in the recovery, and drove our tom-tom tinker home, Paul and I sheepishly thanking him for a job well done. When he was safely out of sight, Paul and I slapped skin and laughed all the way home.
